Features
Within the Natural Space we find two towns. Las Cruceras and La Rinconada, whose origin is linked to an economic resource that had its splendor between 1936 and 1975: resin. This product slowly exuded from wounds made in the bark of pine trees. It was collected in barrels and lowered on mules to the Las Cruceras distillery, where up to 50 families dedicated to the exploitation of miera lived. The demand for labor and the exclusive dedication of the resinators favored the towns of Casillas and La Rinconada, the closest to the valley. Currently, attempts are being made to reactivate this exploitation for the production of turpentine and rosin. Other traditional resources of the mountain are wood, firewood, pasture for cattle, hunting and fishing, honey, mushrooms, etc., which are still maintained today. All the wood cut in the valley until 1990 arrived at the Las Cruceras sawmill.
What's Nearby
The Iruelas valley is an essential space for the survival of internationally threatened fauna species such as the Iberian imperial eagle and the black vulture, without forgetting its important floristic values, where the Gredos chamomile, yew trees and century-old "rattlesnake" pines stand out, holly, chestnut, etc. The conservation of this heritage has been linked to secular traditional uses and exploitation.Black vultures and very beautiful century-old pines
This protected area is located in the heart of the Cordillera Central, in the eastern foothills of the Sierra de Gredos, on the right slope of the Alberche River and the Burguillo reservoir's watershed. Its total surface area is 8,828 ha, which is distributed among the municipalities of El Barraco, El Tiemblo, Navaluenga and San Juan de la Nava.
This reserve is home to the most important black vulture nesting area in our Community, located on the northern limit of the distribution area of this species. To the value that this space has for the conservation of the black vulture, the values of other species of the environment1 fauna are added, among which the presence of the imperial eagle and the flora stand out, with important endemic species and plant formations of notable species such as the yew , holly, century-old rattlesnake pines, mountain elms, chestnut groves, etc.
